Joseph Smith Taught: (History of the Church 3:30) (Elders Journal July 1838)
“The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it”
Are we disciples of Jesus Christ, should we also not gain a testimony for ourselves of the life and atonement of Jesus Christ? (Alma 5:45-46)
The Doctrine and Covenants Gospel Doctrine class is a thematic approach to the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. As such we will seldom be taking each section and going through it in depth but rather we will be discussing a topic/theme and showing the doctrine taught. Todays topic is central to our theology and is the fundamental/foundational doctrine of the church. Each of us needs to know for ourselves concerning the doctrine of Jesus Christ, that he existed before he was born, that he lived a sinless life, taught the gospel with authority, organized his church, performed the atonement, died, and was resurrected. Today we will examine this doctrine in detail through the use of the Doctrine and Covenants!
Physical Appearance:
"Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is “the express image” of His Father’s person (Heb. 1:3). He walked the earth as a human being, as a perfect man, and said, in answer to a question put to Him: “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (John 14:9). This alone ought to solve the problem to the satisfaction of every thoughtful, reverent mind. The conclusion is irresistible, that if the Son of God be the express image (that is, likeness) of His Father’s person, then His Father is in the form of a man; for that was the form of the Son of God, not only during His mortal life, but before His mortal birth, and after His Resurrection."
Ensign Feb 2002 - The Origin of Man - The first presidency of the church
Was he immortal? No
John 5:26 - although not immortal he did have life in himself - power was given to him to rise again - resurrection
26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; (Power to rise again given him of God)
John 10:17-18
17 I lay down my life that I might take it again
18 No man taketh it from me - I lay it down of myself - I can die, and rise again
D&C 122.7-8 he has had everything bad happen to him - and more!
D&C 62:1 - he is our advocate with the father - knows weakness and how to succor those who are tempted!
D&C 133:53 In all their afflictions he was afflicted - he redeemed them, bore them, and carried them all the days of old!
Moroni 7:45-48 Charity suffereth long, kind, envieth not, is not puffed up, seeketh not her own...
JST Mathew 3:24-26 - grew up with his brothers - waxed strong, spake not as other men! neither could he be taught! he needed not that any man should teach him!
Abr 3:19 More intelligent than all the sons of God or the spirits that had been organized
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve said: “When … difficult times come to us, we can remember that Jesus had to descend below all things before He could ascend above them, and that He suffered pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind that He might be filled with mercy and know how to succor His people in their infirmities (see D&C 88:6; Alma 7:11–12)” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1995, 91; or Ensign, Nov. 1995, 69).
Those who heard the Savior’s parables of instruction, therefore, were able to understand those principles they were prepared to receive. Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has said, “As the Master Teacher,
D&C 82:3 For unto whom much is given much is required - he who sins against the greater light - receives the greater condemnation!
Those who merely listened to the story were protected from themselves. They did not know or understand the meaning of the story and thus were not condemned as much as if he would have spoken in simple clear terms. Thus he concealed the doctrine from those who would not have accepted it even if it was spoken as clear as word can be! Does this not show the compassion and love of the savior even for those who hated him!
What is the atonement?
Alma 34:10-17
10 Not a human sacrifice - but an infinite and eternal sacrifice
11 No man can sacrifice his own blood to atone for the sins of another - do we kill a mans brother if he kills? No
12 the law requireth the life of him who hath murdered
13-14 it is expedient that there be a great last sacrifice - more than just the sheding of blood - an infinite and eternal sacrifice!
"The Book of Mormon teaches us of an infinite atonement (see 2 Ne. 9:7; 2 Ne. 25:16; Alma 34:10-17), an atoning sacrifice by Christ that is unbounded by time, ethnicity, geography, or even kinds of sins, save for the unpardonable sin of denying the Holy Ghost (see Alma 39:6). The Resurrection includes all people “from the days of Adam down” to the end of time (Alma 40:18), those “both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female” (Alma 11:44). The Atonement is also infinite in the sense that the Savior not only overcame death and sin, but he also took upon himself “the pains and the sicknesses” and the “infirmities” of his people (Alma 7:11–12). The Atonement is infinite, too, in that because of the redemption made possible by his beloved Son, our Heavenly Father is able to forgive us “as often as [we] repent” (Mosiah 26:30–31; see also Moro. 6:8).
Through repentance we can become at one with Christ, or, as Jacob put it, we can “be reconciled unto him” (Jacob 4:11). Amaleki invited the people of his day—and us as well—to “come unto Christ … and partake of his salvation … and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him” (Omni 1:26). We become reconciled with him when we willingly give our souls to him as he offered his life for us." Ensign 1996 Jan - infinite Atonement
15-16 Thus he brings salvation to all those who believe on his name - the intent of this sacrifice -
16 Mercy can satisfy the demands of justice and through repentance remission of sins can be gained!D&C 20:22-28
Two phase salvation: Salvation from Sin - Salvation from Death
They must obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed in the scriptures!
Article of Faith #4
I witness to you that if you will really try and will not rationalize or rebel—repenting often and pleading for the grace, or help, of Christ—you positively are going to be “good enough,” that is, acceptable before the Lord; you are going to make it to the celestial kingdom, being perfect in Christ; and you are going to receive the blessings and glory and joy that God desires for each of His precious children—including specifically you and me. I testify that God lives and wants us to come home. I testify that Jesus lives. In the holy name of Jesus Christ, amen. Ensign October 2016 - am I good enough
This is the Good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Who can claim it is Just for the righteous to be damned because they did good works?
Who can claim it is Just for the sinner to be saved without even attempting to obey God, and do his commandments?
Who can claim that they "Earned" their way to heaven - none of us have done so - it is the gift of God given to us all not by any merit of our own but through the merit and atonement of Jesus Christ.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the Gospel of Obedience to the Commandments, and the gospel where mercy and justice are both perfectly fulfilled. God himself obeys his own laws, and saves those who fulfill the requrements of salvation, and damns those who do not. It is the Gospel of a perfectly just and equitable opportunite for all mankind to learn and accept/reject these principles before the punishment/rewards are presented to them!
This is the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and the doctrine of all the prophets from the beginning of time even until today. That one must not only believe, but do, or ones belief is in vain!!
Why is it so important that we receive this remission of our sins?
2 Nephi 9:13-16
All mankind will be raised from the dead and become incorruptible and immortal
All mankind’s knowledge shall be perfect, and know of their righteousness and sinfulness
Those who are righteous shall be righteous still and those who are filthy shall be filthy still
Alma 11:42-45
Death of Christ looses bands of temporal death – all be raised.
This restoration shall come upon all, old, and young, male and female.
mortal body is raised to an immortal body...that they can die no more
1 Corin 15:35-44
That which men sowest in his/her body reapest in the resurrection - restoration.
There are different types of bodies in the resurrection.
One glory of the Celestial (all Celestial bodies are the same)
One glory of the Terrestrial (All Terrestrial bodies are the same)
And another Glory of the Telestial (There are differing degrees in Telestial glory)
D&C 88:27-32
Those quickened by a portion of celestial glory shall receive of the same in fullness.
Those quickened by a portion of the Terrestrial glory shall receive of the same in fullness.
Those quickened by a portion of the Terrestrial glory shall receive of the same in fullness.
The rest are also quickened to receive that which they had been willing to receive.
All Resurrected beings:

Recognizable as the individual they were when mortal.
Do not suffer death, pain or temptation
D&C 76:50-70

Priests and kings and received of his fullness and glory
They are Gods even the sons of GOD
All things are theirs, present, future, they have overcome all.
They dwell in presence of God and Christ forever
Bodies glory is that of the sun even the glory of God.
Minister to Terestrial (vs 87)
Equal in power, might and dominion (vs 95)
Only the highest heaven or degree can reproduce (marriage required)
D&C 130: 1-2, Moroni 7:48
We will be like the savior and see as we are seen and know as we are known.
Same sociality as here now but coupled with eternal glory – knowledge and power
JST History 1:17,32, 43
Brightness and glory defy description.
Standing above him in air – defy gravity.
Countenance like lightning
Ability to gather light around themselves, and travel almost instantly as it were elsewhere.
Luke 24:36-43
Appeared instantly among them
Touched and handled his hands and feet – corporal.
Eat fish, and honey in front of them
3 Nephi 11:8
Descended from heaven – defy gravity.
D&C 76:71-80
Receive glory of Jesus, but not of his fullness.
Receive presence of Son, but not of Father
Do not obtain the crown – because not valiant.
Minister to Telestial( vs 86)
D&C 76:81-85
The glory of the lesser, and differ in glory as stars do.
Received not Testimony of Jesus, but do not deny Holy Ghost.
No redeemed until the last resurrection
These are bodies similar to what we have now except coupled with eternal glory and immortal, perfected, and can feel no pain.
"Some of the adversities we face are simply a natural consequence of living in a telestial world instead of a celestial one. Possessing telestial bodies, living among telestial people, and having telestial knowledge and wisdom naturally bring difficulties, problems, and frustrations.
More importantly, I have come to realize that to live in a telestial world but to be celestial people is the test. Our exemplar is Jesus Christ who, referring to Joseph Smith’s great hardships, told the Prophet: “Know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good. “The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?” (D&C 122:7–8)."
Ensign 1981, February, “What to do with Adversity”
“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16.)
This is everlasting life in the most literal sense.
Helaman 14:30-31 – Restoration – Law of the Harvest
30 And now remember, remember, my brethren, that whosoever perisheth, perisheth unto himself; and whosoever doeth iniquity, doeth it unto himself; for behold, ye are free; ye are permitted to act for yourselves; for behold, God hath given unto you a knowledge and he hath made you free.
31 He hath given unto you that ye might know good from evil, and he hath given unto you that ye might choose life or death; and ye can do good and be restored unto that which is good, or have that which is good restored unto you; or ye can do evil, and have that which is evil restored unto you.
Moroni 10:32-34
32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.
33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.
34 And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to rest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again reunite, and I am brought forth triumphant through the air, to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah, the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead. Amen.

Jesus Christ - the person - what was he like?
Physical Appearance:
Isaiah 53:2 no form nor comeliness
He looked exactly like his father - just as Seth did:

Those who heard the Savior’s parables of instruction, therefore, were able to understand those principles they were prepared to receive. Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has said, “As the Master Teacher,
Christ tailored His tutoring, depending upon the spiritual readiness of His pupils
.”In this way the parables both reveal and conceal at the same time
. The Savior was not so concerned with concealing when He used parables of rebuke. To His enemies, He said, “Unto you that believe not, I speak in parables; that your unrighteousness may be rewarded unto you” (Joseph Smith Translation, Matt. 21:34; emphasis added).Frank F. Judd Jr., “Parables of Jesus: The Priceless Parables,” Ensign, Jan. 2003, 56Thus being merciful to the ignorant - harsh to the purposefully rebelious, and enlightening to the individual who is spiritually prepared!
D&C 82:3 For unto whom much is given much is required - he who sins against the greater light - receives the greater condemnation!
Those who merely listened to the story were protected from themselves. Jesus Christ the Savior of the World: The Atonement
What is the atonement?
Is the atonement Just - is it really right that an individual should suffer for our sins and overcome justice?
Alma 34:10-17
10 Not a human sacrifice - but an infinite and eternal sacrifice
11 No man can sacrifice his own blood to atone for the sins of another - do we kill a mans brother if he kills? No
12 the law requireth the life of him who hath murdered

23 He was crucified, died, and rose again the third day
24 He ascended into heaven to sit down next to the Father
25 He will save as many as will believe and be baptized and endure to the end
26-28 Not only those before but after his ressurection
The Savior describes His atoning sacrifice in his own words!
Read D&C 19:16–19 with class members. Explain that this is the only scripture passage in which the Savior describes His own suffering during His atoning sacrifice. What does this passage teach about the Savior’s suffering for us?
Why was Jesus willing to experience such great suffering for us?

This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
That there is a way, and means prepared for those who will accept Jesus Christ as their savior
. They must not only accept him though, they MUST obey him and his commandments. They MUST fulfill the requirements he has laid out for a remission of their sins, or they will not receive of this gift. For God will not be mocked! (This is a gift because none of us deserves it, for all are under the penalty of sin, and all are unclean before GOD)Who can claim it is Just for the righteous to be damned because they did good works?
Who can claim it is Just for the sinner to be saved without even attempting to obey God, and do his commandments?
Who can claim that they "Earned" their way to heaven - none of us have done so - it is the gift of God given to us all not by any merit of our own but through the merit and atonement of Jesus Christ.

Salvation from Death
The effect of Jesus Christ's Death - and infinite and eternal ressurection!
Why is it so important that we receive this remission of our sins?
What is so bad about this...?
Who here remembers every act that they have performed in their life? Do you remember every good thing you've ever done? Do you remember every bad thing you've ever done? What if you did... how would that be?
This is the Ressurection - the two edged sword of eternal immortal life!
Doctrines of the Resurrection:
2 Nephi 9:13-16
All mankind will be raised from the dead and become incorruptible and immortal

We through the atonement of Jesus Christ and his plan of salvation for us will also live forever, but it is up to us to determine if our resurrection will be the resurrection of the Just or the Unjust.I hope that we will all take advantage of the atonement of Jesus Christ by obeying its laws and ordinances so that when we are resurrected we will be able to see as we are seen, and know as we are known, and be able to stand when we see Christ for we shall be like him! through his atonement!
Amen.
